Kawhi Leonard was supposed to be back in Toronto by now. Instead, he is in Los Angeles in trade limbo, waiting for the NBA to finish investigating whether the Clippers paid him under the table through a fake sponsorship with a company called Aspiration.
The trade framework is done. Toronto gets Kawhi. The Clippers get Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and multiple future first-round picks. The Raptors are ready to send it. The Clippers are ready to send it.
The league is not ready to send it. That is a problem for everyone involved.
The Investigation Explained
Aspiration was a financial services company that partnered with the Clippers in 2022. It sponsored the arena. It signed a $28 million endorsement deal with Kawhi as a spokesperson.
The company went bankrupt in 2024. Documents from the bankruptcy filing appeared to show that Aspiration never had the revenue to pay Kawhi $28 million and that the sponsorship deal was structured as a way to circumvent the NBA salary cap.
The league started investigating in the spring. They are working with financial regulators, former Aspiration executives, and Clippers front-office personnel to determine whether Steve Ballmer or team president Lawrence Frank knew about the arrangement.
If the answer is yes, the Clippers face potentially unprecedented penalties. If the answer is no, the trade proceeds and everyone moves on.
What This Means for the Trade
Nothing until the investigation ends. The NBA is not going to approve a trade involving Kawhi Leonard while there is an open investigation into how Kawhi Leonard’s contract was structured.
The timeline is unclear. Adam Silver’s office has said the investigation will conclude in the coming weeks, which in NBA-speak could mean anywhere from two weeks to two months.
In the meantime, Kawhi is not practicing. He is not attending team functions. He is in limbo. So is Ingram. So is Dick.
Why Kawhi Wants Toronto
Toronto is where his career took off. He won a Finals MVP there in 2019. He said publicly during the run that Toronto was the best experience of his basketball life.
He is 35 years old. He is looking for one last run. Toronto has a legitimate young core with Scottie Barnes as the franchise player. Adding Kawhi as a scoring wing gives them a real shot at the East semifinals.
He also wants to be near his family in southern Ontario, where his mother has been dealing with health issues. That is not a small factor.
Why the Clippers Are Moving Him
They cannot afford to keep him. He is entering the final year of his three-year extension at $50.3 million. His body is unpredictable. He has not played more than 65 games in a season since 2019.
The Clippers also need a fresh start. James Harden has been a disappointment. Paul George is a Sixer. The old core has completely broken up.
Getting Ingram and picks lets them retool around Ivica Zubac and John Collins for a year and then rebuild through the draft in 2027 and 2028. That is the reality of the Clippers’ situation.
The Penalty Scenarios
If the NBA finds that the Clippers knowingly paid Kawhi through Aspiration, penalties could include the loss of multiple first-round picks, significant fines, and the suspension of Ballmer or Frank. Some analysts have speculated about voiding Kawhi’s current contract, but that would create a huge legal fight.
The most likely scenario is a large fine and the forfeiture of one or two first-round picks. That would allow the trade to proceed with modifications.
The Prediction
The trade eventually happens. Kawhi ends up in Toronto by mid-August. The Clippers accept some level of penalty and move on. Kawhi has a resurgent season with Barnes, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley in Toronto.
Then he retires after next season, becomes a Raptors legend, and everyone forgets about Aspiration.
Or the investigation blows up and the trade gets voided and Kawhi plays out his contract in LA. That is the other scenario, and it would be one of the wildest situations in NBA history.
