The Kawhi Leonard trade market is heating up, and the team that made him a champion is at the center of it. According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors have been discussing a Leonard trade for two weeks, with talks accelerating as training camp approaches.
Leonard has one year left on his contract at $50.3 million. He reportedly preferred to remain in Los Angeles, but the Clippers declined to hand him a long-term extension this summer, and both sides have started to wonder if it is time to move on.
Toronto is the obvious destination. Leonard delivered the only championship in Raptors history in 2019, then walked to the Clippers in free agency. Six years and a lot of playoff heartbreak later, the door is open for a homecoming.
The Raptors are not rebuilding, exactly, but they are stuck in the middle. Scottie Barnes has become a legitimate star, and RJ Barrett is a solid running mate. The health caveat matters. Leonard has missed all or part of every playoff run since his knee injury in 2021, and no team is trading a first-round pick for a player who cannot stay on the floor in April and May.
