Golden State just added Bradley Beal, but the front office is not done maneuvering. According to multiple league sources, the Warriors are quietly listening to trade offers for Jimmy Butler as the team tries to reshape the roster around Stephen Curry for a final title push.
The Butler talks are still preliminary. Golden State has not shopped Butler aggressively, but head coach Steve Kerr and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. have taken calls from at least four teams, according to sources. The interested parties reportedly include the Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets, and Sacramento Kings.
Miami’s interest is fascinating given the history. Butler forced his way out of Miami last season in a messy midseason trade, but the Heat still have interest in creating a big three around Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. Any deal would require Miami to include picks and expiring contracts, and Butler would likely need to sign off on returning to a team he loudly wanted to leave.
The rationale for a Warriors trade is complicated. Butler was acquired in February and helped stabilize a Warriors team that was falling apart. He averaged 18 points, seven assists, and six rebounds in his 30 games with Golden State and was a stabilizing veteran presence.
But Butler will be 36 in a few weeks, and his contract has three years and $114 million remaining. Beal now provides the secondary scoring the Warriors needed, and moving Butler could bring back a younger, more athletic wing plus draft assets to reload for the post-Curry era.
The complication is Curry himself. He is 37, still playing at an MVP level, and every offseason move is being made to maximize his final championship window. Trading Butler could weaken the current roster in the short term, and Curry has quietly made clear to management that he wants to compete now.
The Warriors are already deep into the second apron of the salary cap. Moving Butler could ease that financial burden, but the trade would need to bring back real production to avoid weakening the roster before opening night.
Detroit is the interesting suitor. The Pistons are building around Cade Cunningham and have a mountain of future draft picks, plus expiring contracts that fit into a Butler deal. Detroit is also looking for a veteran presence to lead a young locker room, and Butler fits that description.
The timeline matters. NBA training camps open in less than three weeks, and any Butler trade would need to happen before the end of September to give teams a full runway. If nothing materializes, the Warriors will start the season with a starting lineup of Curry, Beal, Butler, Draymond Green, and Kevon Looney.
Kerr said Sunday that no roster moves are imminent. That is coach speak. The Warriors are exploring every option, and the next 20 days will decide the shape of Golden State’s final championship push.
