Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors: Bucks Eyeing Warriors Star’s Expiring Deal

Jimmy Butler might be on the move again.

The Warriors star is currently on a one-year, $57 million contract and rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered in late January. The Warriors front office is in a tough position. Trading Butler while he is rehabbing would be a cold business move, but his contract represents Golden State’s only real path to making the kind of significant roster addition the franchise needs.

And the Milwaukee Bucks are reportedly very interested.

The logic for Milwaukee is straightforward. The Bucks have been in win-now mode for years. They need help around Giannis Antetokounmpo. Butler on an expiring contract gives them short-term flexibility and a star wing who, when healthy, can be one of the best two-way players in the league. If the rehab goes well, Milwaukee gets a championship-caliber piece for the 2026-27 push.

The risk is also obvious. Butler is 36 years old. He is coming off a serious knee injury. There is no guarantee he comes back at full strength. Trading real assets for a player who might never be himself again is the kind of move that can set a franchise back years.

For Golden State, the math is more about the future. The Warriors missed the playoffs entirely this season after losing in the play-in tournament to Phoenix. Steph Curry is approaching the end of his prime. The team needs to either make a major star addition this summer or accept that the next chapter does not include another title run.

Anthony Slater of ESPN recently reported a “decreased level of thirst” from the Warriors to make a monster move this summer. The interpretation is that Golden State is being strategic. They are trying to bridge the end of the Curry era while keeping the long-term flexibility intact. Trading Butler for assets is part of that strategy, even if it costs them a player they like.

The Warriors are reportedly still going to make a run at adding LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, or Kawhi Leonard. Giannis is reportedly Golden State’s top trade target. Pulling that off would almost certainly require moving Butler in a related deal, because nobody is doing a Giannis trade without a salary match.

If the Bucks are willing to take Butler’s contract in a Giannis deal, the whole framework starts to come together. Milwaukee gets a veteran star wing and expiring money. Golden State gets the franchise-altering player they need to keep the championship window open. Both sides walk away with something they wanted.

The complication is that Giannis has not officially asked out. He has expressed frustration with the direction of the Bucks. He has been linked to multiple teams. But until he makes the formal request, every trade scenario is speculation.

For Butler personally, a return to a true contender on a short-term deal could be exactly what his career needs. He has been a championship-or-bust guy his whole career. Going to Milwaukee to chase a ring next to Giannis, even on a one-year audition, fits everything we know about him.

The Warriors and Bucks have plenty of incentive to keep talking. Whether the actual deal gets done depends on what the rest of the NBA offseason looks like and how Butler’s rehab progresses.

One thing is clear. Butler’s next move is going to be one of the most important dominoes of the entire offseason.
