Jaylen Brown to the Denver Nuggets has been kicking around NBA circles all summer, and every time you think the story is dead, another version pops back up. The latest is a proposed framework of Brown and Sam Hauser going to Denver for Jamal Murray and Cam Johnson.
Is this actually happening? Almost certainly not, at least not this offseason. But the reason the rumor has legs is that it makes basketball sense for both sides, and that alone keeps it alive.
Denver’s problem has been the same for two years running. Nikola Jokic is on a hall-of-fame trajectory that is running out of prime window. Murray has been alternately brilliant and injured. The rest of the roster keeps getting picked apart by cap constraints, and the drop-off after Jokic and Murray has been steep enough that early playoff exits are becoming a pattern.
Adding Brown solves the wing problem for the rest of the decade. He is a legitimate 25-a-night scorer, one of the better switchable defenders in the league, and he has playoff experience at the highest level as the 2024 Finals MVP. Pairing him with Jokic would give Denver arguably the best two-man combination in the West.
The catch is Murray. Denver is not going to give up Murray unless they are absolutely convinced they are getting an upgrade, and Boston is not going to send Brown out unless they are getting elite talent back. Murray is a good player. He is not on Brown’s level as a two-way piece.
For Boston, this trade would only make sense if they have decided the Jayson Tatum-Brown pairing has hit its ceiling. That is a bigger call than the trade itself. Tatum and Brown have won a title together and have been to multiple Conference Finals. Breaking them up is a franchise-altering decision, not a tweaks-around-the-edges move.
My honest read on this rumor is that it exists because both front offices are stuck. Denver knows they need a wing upgrade and their cap situation makes it hard to find one. Boston is dealing with a massive luxury tax bill and might have to make a significant salary move next summer or the summer after. Rumors bubble up when situations like that exist.
The Cam Johnson addition would help Boston in real ways, though. He is a knockdown shooter with good size, and he would slot right into the Sam Hauser role plus some. The problem is Cam Johnson plus Jamal Murray does not add up to a Jaylen Brown replacement, and Boston fans would riot if this trade went through as constructed.
What is more likely is that both teams sit tight this season, evaluate their playoff runs, and revisit the conversation next summer if either situation deteriorates. Trade rumors like this rarely happen mid-season anymore. They happen in June and July.
My prediction is that Brown is still in Boston for at least the next two years. Denver has to find a different path to a wing upgrade, probably a smaller name via the buyout market or a late-February deadline move.
But the rumor will keep coming back. It always does when the fits line up this cleanly.
