Jalen Williams Ruled OUT for Thunder-Spurs Game 3: Hamstring Injury Forces OKC to Adjust

The Western Conference Finals just got more interesting for all the wrong reasons. The Oklahoma City Thunder will be without star wing Jalen Williams for Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.

Williams aggravated a left hamstring injury during Game 2 in OKC and will not be available as the series shifts to San Antonio. He was initially listed as questionable, but the team made the cautious call to keep him out.

The hamstring history matters

This is not a new issue. Williams has been dealing with hamstring problems on both legs throughout the playoff run, and the recurring nature of the injury is the most concerning part. A nagging hamstring is the kind of thing that lingers for weeks if it isn’t fully managed, and the Thunder do not want to lose him for the rest of the postseason chasing a Game 3 victory in a road environment that’s going to be hostile.

Holding him out is the smart move. The Thunder are the reigning champs. They have margin to give one road game if they have to.

Who steps up in San Antonio

This is where OKC’s depth gets tested. Cason Wallace is going to play more minutes. Lu Dort is going to take a tougher defensive matchup against either De’Aaron Fox or Dylan Harper, depending on whom San Antonio leans into early. Aaron Wiggins is going to have to give the Thunder real minutes off the bench.

The Thunder bench is one of the deepest in the league, and they’ve already proven they can win without one of their stars. But losing Williams in a Conference Finals road game is a different challenge than losing him in a regular-season Wednesday in Phoenix.

This is San Antonio’s opening

The Spurs already took Game 1 in overtime. They have home court for the next two games. Their two best guards, Fox and Harper, are healthy and available for Game 3. Victor Wembanyama is fully ready to dominate.

If the Spurs do not take advantage of this Williams absence and protect home court, the series is going to feel different in a hurry. OKC can absolutely come into San Antonio and steal one if the Spurs let them.

The Wemby factor

Wembanyama is the reason the Spurs even have a chance to make this series competitive. He has been the best player on the floor in stretches of both games, and with Williams out, OKC’s defensive matchups on him get harder. Chet Holmgren is going to have to play more minutes guarding Wemby straight up. The Thunder are great defensively, but they are not built to handle Wembanyama for 40 minutes.

If Wemby goes for 35 and 12, the Spurs win Game 3.

The series picture

Tied 1-1. Home court advantage now with San Antonio for the next two games. Williams out for Game 3 and questionable for Game 4. The Spurs were supposed to be the team scrambling for a way back into this series after Game 2. Now they’re the team with momentum, the deeper home crowd, and the healthier star.

OKC is going to find out very quickly whether the depth they leaned on all season can travel.

The bottom line

Jalen Williams’ absence is a real loss for the Thunder. He has been their second-best perimeter creator behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for two straight playoff runs, and you don’t replace that with one guy off the bench. You replace it with five guys playing slightly better than they have been.

Game 3 is going to tell us whether the champs are still on their way back to the Finals or whether the Spurs are about to crash the party. Tip is Friday night in San Antonio.
