Ja Morant Traded to Portland: Blazers Land a Franchise Player, Grizzlies Choose Sanity
The Memphis Grizzlies finally pulled the plug. Ja Morant is a Portland Trail Blazer, and the deal that ends one of the most turbulent star tenures of the decade is officially done.
Portland sent Jerami Grant, Kris Murray, and a million bucks in cash to Memphis for the two-time All-Star. That is the entire package. No unprotected firsts, no pick swaps, no salary filler nightmare.
The Blazers just got a franchise cornerstone for role players. The Grizzlies chose sanity over stubbornness. Both sides walked away with something they needed.
Memphis had been dragging this out for two years too long. Every suspension, every off-court incident, every awkward postgame press conference chipped away at the trade value. Ja was worth an Anthony Davis-style haul in 2023. By 2026 he was worth Jerami Grant and hope.
That is what happens when a franchise refuses to read the room. The Grizzlies do get a useful stretch four and a young wing, but they left real assets on the table by waiting this long.
Portland does not care about any of that. The Blazers finally have someone who bends defenses without needing perfect spacing around him. Scoot Henderson can slide off the ball. Deni Avdija gets easier looks. Donovan Clingan becomes a rim-running nightmare with Ja lobbing him passes on the break.
The fit is beautiful on paper. The Blazers have been searching for an identity since Damian Lillard left. Ja Morant is a personality on the floor. That matters in Portland, a city that has always fallen in love with electric guards.
The risk is obvious. Ja has played 59 games total across the last two seasons. His body has taken a beating. His off-court history is not spotless.
But this is the exact right price for exactly that risk. If Ja stays healthy and focused, Portland has stolen a top-fifteen player for pennies. If he flames out, the Blazers lose two rotation guys and move on.
There is no downside for Chauncey Billups here. His seat was getting warm. Now he has a top-ten offensive engine and a real reason for ownership to give him another two years to make something happen.
Ja gets a fresh start in a market that will not scrutinize his every move the way Memphis did. The Trail Blazers have not made the playoffs since 2021. Nobody is demanding a title. Just entertain the building and drag this franchise back to relevance.
My take. The Blazers won this trade the second they refused to include a first-round pick. The Grizzlies did not lose so much as they finally stopped bleeding. Portland just became must-watch League Pass basketball again, and Ja Morant gets the reset his career desperately needed.
