Giannis Antetokounmpo Could Reunite With Khris Middleton in Miami. Would It Actually Work?
The Miami Heat are not done building around Giannis Antetokounmpo. According to veteran NBA writer Marc Stein, Miami is eyeing former All-Star forward Khris Middleton as a free agent target, along with Bradley Beal and Gabe Vincent.
Middleton is the most interesting name on that list, and it has everything to do with the man he’d be reuniting with.
Middleton and Giannis played together in Milwaukee from 2013 to 2025. Twelve seasons. One NBA title, in 2021. A dozen playoff runs. One of the most underrated duos of the last decade, given how many times they went deep together. Middleton hit some of the biggest shots of that title run and rarely gets talked about the way he should.
But that was five years ago in basketball years. Middleton turns 35 next month. He has spent the last two seasons battling injuries and shrinking roles, splitting last year between the Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks. His line: 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists a game. Solid role player numbers. Not All-Star numbers.
So would this actually work?
On paper, yes. Middleton was one of the best midrange shot-makers in basketball at his peak. He still shoots a competent three when healthy. Playing next to Giannis is easier than playing anywhere else in the NBA, because Giannis creates so much gravity in the paint. Middleton would get the cleanest catch-and-shoot looks of his career on the Heat.
The concern is defense and durability. Middleton is not the wing defender he was five years ago. And Miami has already dropped a bag on Tim Hardaway Jr., who is another shooter with defensive limitations. Piling too many limited defenders around Giannis is how a title contender turns into a play-in team.
Here is what Miami is really doing. They just made the biggest trade in franchise history to land Giannis. Pat Riley is trying to give him every reason to be happy on Day 1. Bringing in a former teammate he trusts, a coach in Erik Spoelstra he respects, and a supporting cast built for playoff basketball is the whole plan.
Bradley Beal is the more talented get. Gabe Vincent gives them a proven backup point guard who already knows the Heat culture. Middleton is the emotional bet, and it might be the smart one.
Giannis lost his co-star when he left Milwaukee. Miami has a chance to give him a new one. If Middleton has anything left, this is a fit that could pay off in April and May. If he doesn’t, well, Riley has already survived worse veteran bets.
