Giannis Trade Watch: Bucks Owner Sets June 23 Deadline Ahead of NBA Draft

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future is going to be decided by the night of the NBA Draft. Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam has reportedly set June 23 as the internal deadline for Giannis to either sign an extension or be traded, ending months of speculation about when this thing finally breaks.
The Bucks are now openly described as being open for business. The combination of the Bucks missing the playoffs, Giannis publicly questioning the roster, and the front office failing to find the right kind of secondary star around him have created the conditions for the most significant trade in years.
The contenders for him are not subtle about it. The Miami Heat have been positioning themselves all year, and reports suggest they can offer Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, three first-round picks including the No. 13 in this draft, plus picks in 2031 and 2033 and swap rights for up to four years. That is one of the biggest packages a team can put together under the current CBA.
The New York Knicks remain the dark horse. Giannis has reportedly named New York as the only team he would be willing to play for outside of Milwaukee. The Knicks have draft capital, young pieces, and a path to making the math work if they want to swing big.
The Cleveland Cavaliers were also reportedly in the mix before the trade deadline. Milwaukee asked for Evan Mobley and all of Cleveland’s draft capital. The Cavaliers balked. They could come back to the table, but the price will not get cheaper.
The most fascinating wrinkle is the leverage Giannis has. He has no-trade veto power in practice because he can refuse to extend with any team that acquires him. That means the only places he can realistically be traded are places where he will commit long-term. That short list shrinks the field. Miami is on it. New York is on it. A couple of other surprises might be on it, but most of the league is not.
The Bucks themselves are stuck in a brutal position. They could try to run it back, but the roster is older, more expensive, and harder to upgrade. They could deal Giannis and start a complete rebuild, with Damian Lillard’s contract becoming a separate problem to solve. They could keep him on a short leash and try one more season, knowing the market for him will only get colder.
Haslam’s June 23 deadline forces the issue. Either Giannis signs a new extension with full belief in the roster around him, or Milwaukee makes a deal that defines the next decade of the franchise. Both outcomes are seismic.
Giannis is 31. He has won an MVP, a Finals MVP, and a championship in Milwaukee. He has stated that legacy matters to him. He has also been clear that competing for titles matters more than where he plays. The Bucks have not been close to a title in two years. The math is starting to push him toward a new chapter.
The next three weeks are going to be the loudest part of the NBA offseason. The draft is June 23. The Giannis decision is the same day. The league will be on hold until it lands. Whether it lands in Miami, New York, Milwaukee, or somewhere nobody has guessed yet is the question that defines the summer.
