Fred VanVleet is staying put. The Houston Rockets guard picked up his $25 million player option for the 2026-27 season, giving Houston a proven veteran floor general as it tries to leap from Play-In hopeful to legitimate contender in the West.
This is the safe move for VanVleet. He is 32, coming off a solid but unspectacular season, and the free agent guard market this summer never really opened up the way agents projected. Twenty-five million guaranteed is more than any team was going to offer on the open market.
For Houston, it removes a major question mark. The Rockets built around a young core of Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., and Reed Sheppard, but they always needed an adult in the room to run the offense and hit the big shot in crunch time. VanVleet has been exactly that.
Ime Udoka’s system relies on ball movement and defense first, and VanVleet fits both. He is a career 37 percent three-point shooter, he does not turn the ball over, and he plays hard on the ball every night. Those are the boring skills that win playoff games.
The question is what Houston does next. The Rockets have cap flexibility, a mountain of future draft picks, and they are one clear-cut star short of being a top-four team in the West. Rumors have swirled around James Harden, Kevin Durant, and even LeBron James, though none of those deals have materialized yet.
VanVleet’s willingness to stay signals that the veteran leadership group in Houston believes in the direction. Sengun is 24 and already a legitimate All-Star. Thompson is one of the ten best perimeter defenders in the league. Sheppard is expected to take a major leap after a quiet rookie year.
The Southwest Division has become brutal. Oklahoma City is still the defending champion. Dallas has Kyrie Irving healthy. Memphis is retooling. The Rockets need every game they can find, and having VanVleet available for 70 of them makes a real difference.
Houston opens the season at home against the Thunder. That game already looks like a playoff-caliber measuring stick. VanVleet will be on the floor for tipoff, and the Rockets can now focus on getting one more move done before opening night.
