Fred VanVleet Opts Into $25 Million Player Option, Stays With the Rockets for Another Run
Fred VanVleet is not leaving Houston. The Rockets guard opted into his $25 million player option for the 2026-27 season, giving Ime Udoka’s roster the same steady veteran hand it needed a year ago.
It is not a flashy move. It is a smart one for both sides.
For VanVleet, the $25 million check is the top of the market at his age and position right now. He turned 32 this year. Point guards do not usually get life-changing contracts at that stage, especially guys who have battled injuries and are coming off a season where the shot did not fall the way it used to.
For the Rockets, keeping VanVleet in the lineup lets Udoka build his team around real veterans who know how to play winning basketball. Houston is trying to graduate from lottery team to contender, and you do not do that with a 22-year-old running the offense every night.
VanVleet averaged 14.1 points and 5.6 assists last season in his second year with the Rockets. The numbers are down from his Toronto peak, but that is because Houston is loaded with young scorers who need touches. Amen Thompson, Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun and Tari Eason all need the ball. VanVleet’s job is to make sure they get it in the right spots.
The Rockets went 52-30 last season and stole home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They lost in six to the Warriors. That was a step forward, but Houston knows the next tier is where the hard part starts. Getting to the second round is easier than getting to the conference finals.
Retaining VanVleet is one of the offseason moves that keeps that trajectory going. He does not need the ball to be valuable. He shoots threes, guards up in position, plays with grit and closes games with a professional’s calm. Every young Rockets guard learns from him.
There is also the leadership factor. VanVleet has a championship ring from the 2019 Raptors. Nobody else in the Rockets locker room has that. When Houston starts talking about a playoff series, VanVleet is the one guy in the room who has actually been through it.
The Rockets could have looked elsewhere for a starting point guard. Free agency was not exactly stocked with All-Star lead guards, but there were younger players available. Instead, Houston is running it back with the guy they know and trust.
The next question for the Rockets is whether they can make a real trade splash before the season starts. Kevin Durant rumors have quieted down. Giannis is off the market after the Bucks sent him to Miami. The big fish that were in the pond earlier this summer have mostly been caught.
That leaves Houston working the margins. Add a shooter, add a defender, and let Udoka cook. VanVleet’s presence gives Houston a firm anchor at the point guard spot while the front office figures out what the next move is.
