DeMar DeRozan is on the move again, and the latest rumored landing spot is the Detroit Pistons. If this actually happens, it will be the most on-brand DeRozan move of a career full of them.
The report, first surfaced this week, links DeRozan to a Pistons team that just made the playoffs and is trying to accelerate its timeline. Cade Cunningham has become a legitimate All-Star. Ausar Thompson is one of the best young perimeter defenders in the league. Jalen Duren gives them a real center. What they lack is a proven late-clock scorer who can hunt his own shot in the fourth quarter.
Enter DeRozan. He is 36, he has averaged 20-plus points in every season for over a decade, and his mid-range shot-making is exactly the kind of skill that shortens games in the playoffs when defenses lock in.
The problem with DeRozan has never been talent. It has been fit and timeline. The Raptors won a title the year after they traded him. The Spurs never got to the playoffs in a real way with him. The Bulls were a fun regular-season team for one year and then fell apart. Sacramento gave him a big deal and immediately regretted the roster around him.
