The Dallas Mavericks may be out of the NBA playoffs, but they are still very much in the headlines.
This week, in the aftermath of the Uvalde school shooting, the Mavericks decided to take an interesting stand on social media.
Specifically, they took to Twitter and sent out a message that immediately went viral – and not for a good reason.
The message largely speaks for itself:
In collaboration with @dallasnews, we went silent on social media for 21 minutes to honor the victims of the Uvalde shooting. https://t.co/HAD0s1S9CL
— Dallas Mavericks (@dallasmavs) May 31, 2022
As does the subsequent response:
The more I look at this tweet, the more I think the initial idea had to be a joke. No person could seriously suggest this and have people agree to do it. https://t.co/Fg8H89qYox

You would’ve been better off taking another 21 minutes to think before bothering with this tweet. https://t.co/JV8C3vyX00

Apparently, it takes very little effort to signal these days.
How pathetic. https://t.co/rrkLLTZBUL

Big picture, it’s easy to see what the Mavericks were going for here. They wanted to acknowledge a major tragedy that occurred close to home in a way that didn’t alienate anyone.
That said – it’s similarly easy to understand why some folks were rubbed the wrong way by it.
The Mavs have been in the news quite a bit in recent weeks for not-so-great reasons. This most recent disaster is just par for the course.
That’s one way to do it. https://t.co/hvBsvrVAuA

Will the social media team ultimately go back and delete this ill-advised tweet?
Time will tell.
