Cooper Flagg Wins Rookie of the Year Unanimously. Mavericks Have Their Star

Cooper Flagg is the unanimous NBA Rookie of the Year. Every single ballot. The Mavericks’ 19 year old won every first place vote, made the All Rookie First Team, and gave Dallas a star to build around for the next 15 years. The hardest part of the season for Mavs fans was watching what should have been a banner moment get partially swallowed by the wider mess of the Mavericks’ year.
Make no mistake though. Flagg lived up to every bit of the hype.
He averaged solid numbers in basically every category. He defended multiple positions. He played hard every night. He took the heat that comes with being a No. 1 pick in a major market and never complained. He was the rare 19 year old who walked into a star role and looked like he belonged from the first preseason game.
“Dallas was never a thought,” Flagg said about the draft process. He was supposed to go to a different team. The Mavericks won the lottery despite 1.8 percent odds. Pure luck handed Dallas a generational player. And the kid has more than rewarded them for it.
The fit with the Mavericks is fascinating. Anthony Davis was supposed to be the running mate. He missed the entire season with a hand injury. Klay Thompson is in the back half of his career. The roster around Flagg is patchwork. He carried more than anybody projected because the supporting cast was thin.
The next step for Flagg is becoming a primary scorer. He showed flashes. He has a real handle for a 6 foot 9 player. His three point shot has potential. He gets to the rim. He has good court vision. The All Star moments will come.
The Mavericks have the ninth pick in the 2026 draft. They need shooting around Flagg. They need a real point guard. They need to figure out what to do with Anthony Davis. The next 12 months will determine whether Flagg’s rookie year was the start of something special or just a bright spot on a team in transition.
Dusty May is the new head coach. The system should be designed to maximize Flagg. May ran one of the most efficient offenses in college basketball at Michigan. He gets the modern game. He understands spacing. He should know how to use a unicorn forward.
The competition for next year’s Rookie of the Year will be wide open. Dybantsa, Peterson, Boozer, and a deep class of prospects are all entering the league. But Flagg is no longer eligible for that conversation. He has graduated to being a building block.
Watching the unanimous vote come in was a clean moment for a Mavericks franchise that has had a chaotic year. Cuban sold. Kidd got fired. Davis got hurt. The fan base revolted at various points. Through all of that, Cooper Flagg was the constant. He was the bright spot. He was the reason to believe.
If you are a Mavericks fan, this is the foundation you wanted. A 19 year old All Rookie First Team unanimous selection who plays multiple positions, defends, and has superstar upside. You build around that. You give him a real coach, a real running mate, and a clean front office, and you have a contender for the next decade.
Dallas has the star. They just need the rest.
