Brandon Miller Is About to Get Paid: Can the Hornets Afford to Be Wrong?

Charlotte is expected to agree to a rookie-scale extension with Brandon Miller in the coming days, with reporting putting the value north of $200 million and one derivative report framing it as five years and $220 million.

Nothing is signed. The deadline is Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. CT, so this gets resolved one way or the other inside two weeks.

The Production Justifies It

Miller averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season across 65 games, all starts, shooting 43.5 percent from the floor, 38.3 percent from three and 89.2 percent from the line. His career line is 19.0, 4.6 and 3.0.

He was All-Rookie First Team in 2024, Eastern Conference Player of the Month in January 2026 and Player of the Week later that month. He also made a three-pointer in 54 consecutive games, a franchise record that passed LaMelo Ball.

Miller is 23, 6-foot-7, and was the second pick in the 2023 draft out of Alabama.

The Shoulder Is the Whole Risk

Here is what makes this a bet rather than a formality. Miller had surgery on May 6, 2026 for instability in his left shoulder. He had already missed 13 games with a shoulder subluxation earlier that season and played through it wearing protective gear.

A recurring shoulder instability in a wing whose game is built on shooting and perimeter contact is not a minor medical footnote. Nobody has publicly confirmed he is fully cleared.

Charlotte is being asked to guarantee a quarter of a billion dollars against that file.

There Is No Plan B

The Hornets traded LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges this offseason. Head coach Charles Lee is running a roster that has been stripped to its studs, and Miller is the only remaining piece with star outcomes on the table.

Charlotte has not made the playoffs since 2016. A franchise in that position does not get to be clever about keeping its best young player. It pays and hopes.

What Lee Likes About Him

“Brandon became more vocal about wanting to become a two-way player,” Lee said of Miller. That is a useful quote, because a 20-point scorer who starts asking about defense is a different long-term asset than one who does not.

Miller is also part of a 2023 extension class that is sorting itself out fast. Victor Wembanyama, Amen Thompson, Ausar Thompson and Keyonte George are already signed. Miller, Anthony Black, Scoot Henderson, Brandin Podziemski and Cason Wallace are not.

My Read

Pay him. The alternative is a restricted free agency in which some team with cap space constructs an offer sheet designed to be painful, and Charlotte matches anyway with worse terms.

The shoulder is a real concern and it is not a reason to hesitate. The Hornets have no leverage, no depth and no recent history of talent evaluation worth defending. They have Brandon Miller. That has to be enough.
