The Atlanta Hawks announced on Thursday that they would be waiving Patty Mills.
Because the decision was made ahead of March 1, the 15-year NBA veteran will now have an opportunity to sign with a playoff team. Of the list of players currently available, Mills on paper seems like one of the better options.
This has been a rough year for Mills. He was traded three times this past summer before eventually winding up in Atlanta. He was supposed to be a productive piece alongside Trae Murray and Dejounte Murray, but for whatever reason, he simply couldn’t make anything happen with the Hawks.
Mills averaged 2.7 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in 19 outings this season.
Fortunately, the 35-year-old is still an expert three-point shooter. He is shooting over 38 percent from beyond the arc this season and could definitely help a team lagging in that department.

Two obvious frontrunners for Mills’ services have emerged.
The first is the Dallas Mavericks.
“This has been Mills’ worst season to date since his rookie year, but the Mavs could pursue him to provide some depth behind fellow Australian, Dante Exum,” NBA writer Noah Weber wrote this week. “Exum’s season has been plagued with injuries, and the Mavs need one more player who can lead the second unit when needed.

“Jaden Hardy has proved that he can do that, but his minutes have fluctuated heavily as of late despite playing some of the best basketball of his career. Mills isn’t someone who moves the needle much for this team, but signing another veteran voice in the locker room who has vast playoff experience could be a great idea.”
If not Dallas, Mills could also make a ton of sense for the Phoenix Suns. He has an established rapport with Kevin Durant and could fill out some depth for that group.
One way or another, the odds are good that Mills will find a new home ahead of this year’s playoffs. Where will that home ultimately be? Time will tell.
