Bucks Linked to Surprising Star in Latest Trade Rumors as Giannis Future Hangs

The Milwaukee Bucks are about to find out who they are. And the latest trade rumor floating around the league makes it sound like the answer might surprise everybody.

According to reporting this week, Milwaukee has been quietly linked to Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant as the front office prepares for the possibility that Giannis Antetokounmpo asks out before the June 23 NBA Draft. That is a head turner. Morant is a two-time All-Star who, when right, is one of the five most explosive guards in the world. He is also a player whose stock has dropped because of injuries and off-court issues.

For the Bucks, the math is brutal but simple. They are not getting younger. Damian Lillard is 35. Brook Lopez is 37. If Giannis is walking, they cannot reset all the way to the floor and expect him to wait. They have to bring in talent, and Morant at 26 with a chip on his shoulder is talent.

Memphis has reportedly listened on Morant before. The relationship between the franchise and the star guard has been strained ever since the second suspension, and a clean break could be in everyone’s interest. The question is whether Milwaukee has the package to make it work without sending out Giannis himself.

The most realistic framework probably starts with Bobby Portis, a young rotation piece like AJ Green, a future first-round pick or two, and matching salary. Memphis would presumably want a real young building block in return, and that is where this gets complicated. The Bucks do not have a Scottie Pippen Jr. type to dangle the way other teams might.

Here is the read from this corner. If Milwaukee can land Morant for a package that does not require trading Giannis, they should pick up the phone today. A Giannis and Ja partnership would be one of the most physically dominant duos the league has ever seen. Imagine those two in transition. Two first-team All-NBA athletes attacking the rim every possession. Defenses would have to choose which fire to put out.

If the only way to land Ja is to send Giannis somewhere else, that is a different conversation. You do not pivot from the best player in your franchise’s history to a guard with health questions and expect to compete in the same window. That would be a soft reset disguised as a star trade.

Here is the other angle worth tracking. The Bucks have a new front office voice in the building who is more aggressive than the previous regime. He is not married to the current roster construction. If he believes he can sell Giannis on a Morant pairing, he will try.

Either way, the next ten days in Milwaukee are going to be the most important in a generation. Either they hold their franchise player, find him a real co-star, and run it back. Or they accept that the window has closed and start gathering picks. The Morant rumor suggests they have not given up. We will see if the Grizzlies actually want to talk.
