A White Lives Matter banner that flew overhead at an English Premiere League game this past week sparked outrage.

The banner in question was flown behind an airplane and was visible over Etihad Stadium in Manchester City.

This move was seen as a direct response to the English Premiere League’s decision to have every team wear a jersey with “Black Lives Matter” written on it in place of player names.

Burnley F.C. subsequently released a statement addressing what transpired.

“Burnley Football Club strongly condemns the actions of those responsible for the aircraft and offensive banner that flew over The Etihad Stadium on Monday evening,” it read.

“We wish to make it clear that those responsible are not welcome at Turf Moor.

“This, in no way, represents what Burnley Football Club stands for and we will work fully with the authorities to identify those responsible and issue lifetime bans.”

With race becoming something of a hot-button issue in sports and society over the last few months, this is likely not the last time organizations will need to figure out the best way to confront these matters.

It will be interesting to see if instances like this arise in frequency as time goes on.
