Yankees Demote Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez: The Kids Aren’t Alright in the Bronx
The New York Yankees hit the reset button on Monday. Two of their most-hyped young players are heading to Triple-A.
New York announced they are optioning shortstop Anthony Volpe and outfielder Jasson Dominguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The move creates space for shortstop phenom George Lombard Jr. to be called up and for outfielder Heliot Ramos, acquired earlier Monday from the Giants, to slot into the lineup.
This is a big deal. Both Volpe and Dominguez are still young. Both were considered core pieces of the next generation of the Yankees. Both have now been sent to the minors during a pennant race because they were not performing.
Start with Volpe. He was a Gold Glove shortstop as a rookie in 2023 and looked like the answer at the position for the next decade. Since then, his production has cratered. He hit .212 last season while leading the American League with 19 errors. This season he was down to a career-low .646 OPS with only one home run and 19 RBIs across 56 games. That is unplayable for a shortstop in the middle of a playoff race.
Dominguez was supposed to be the outfielder of the future. He came up as one of the most hyped prospects in the entire Yankees system, was labeled “The Martian” for his tools, and every scout who wrote about him said he was a future star. This year he hit .230 with six home runs and 14 RBIs in 52 games. Solid at best. Nowhere near what the Yankees needed from him with Aaron Judge and Juan Soto anchoring the lineup.
The fixes are already in motion. George Lombard Jr. is the son of the longtime coach and one of the top shortstop prospects in baseball. He is getting the call to try to stabilize the position. Heliot Ramos was acquired from the Giants earlier in the day as a package deal that included Luis Garcia Jr. He gives the Yankees another proven big-league outfielder for the stretch run.
What this really says is that Aaron Boone and the front office are done waiting. The Yankees are 63-50 and in a division race with Toronto, Boston, and Tampa Bay that is going to come down to the last weekend. They cannot afford to run a career-.230 shortstop and a struggling top prospect out there in a game that matters. They needed real hitters in the lineup. They went and got them.
The tough part for Volpe and Dominguez is that this could be a career-defining moment. If they go down to Triple-A, adjust their swings, and come back playing at a big-league level, they are still core Yankees. If they scuffle down there or take it as a personal blow, this is the year both of them turn into someone else’s problem.
The Yankees are not sentimental. They never have been. Brian Cashman built the organization to win, not to develop guys for their own good. When a promising kid stops producing, they get replaced by whoever produces.
Volpe and Dominguez have to prove they belong. Nothing has been handed to them because of hype, and nothing will be. That is New York.
