The 2019 MLB Home Run Derby promises to be an exciting event as some of the league’s top sluggers square off mano a mano to determine who the true King of the Hill is.
Taking place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, on Monday night, this year’s Home Run Derby features some of the biggest names in the sport.
The reigning and defending National League MVP, Christian Yelich, of the Milwaukee Brewers, was originally supposed to participate in the tournament as the No. 1 seed. Unfortunately, it was announced on Sunday, one day prior to the event, that he would have to skip it due to an injured back.
Taking Yelich’s place is Matt Chapman – the hard-hitting third baseman from the Oakland Athletics. Chapman is going to face off against eighth seeded Toronto Blue Jays stud, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the very first round.
There were some rumblings early in the proceedings that the defending Home Run derby champ, Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies, may play this year. Sadly, that will not happen.
Instead Harper will join a list of one-and-done champs in Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees (2017), Giancarlo Stanton of the New York Yankees (2016) and Todd Frazier of the Cincinnati Reds (2015).
Not since Yoenis Céspedes of the Oakland Athletics in 2013 and 2014 has someone competed and won back to back Home Run Derby contests.
Prior to that, you would have to go all the way back to the 1998 and 1999 constets, in Coors Field and Fenway Park, respectively, to find a back to back inner. At that time, it was Seattle Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. who took him the prizes after having already won once in 1994.
The last time the Home Run Derby came to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1997, it was still known as Jacobs Field. At the time, the event was won by Tino Martinez of the New York Yankees.
