Tarik Skubal Trade Rumors Are Getting Louder. The Tigers Have to Decide Soon.

The Detroit Tigers are 30-44, the trade deadline is six weeks away, and Tarik Skubal is the most valuable trade chip in baseball this summer.

The Cy Young winner is going to be eligible for free agency after the 2026 season, which means the Tigers have to make a decision in the next month and a half. Either they sign him to a long-term extension that locks him in as a franchise pillar, or they trade him for the best prospect package they can get before he hits the open market.

The signs are not pointing toward an extension. Detroit’s record is bad enough that contention next year is not a guarantee. Skubal’s camp is probably going to ask for nine figures over six or seven years, and the Tigers have been historically cautious about handing out that kind of money. The math suggests a trade is more likely than a long-term deal.

Every contender in baseball is going to be in on this. The Dodgers always want elite starting pitching. The Yankees need help in their rotation. The Cubs are right in the middle of the playoff chase and could use a top-of-the-rotation arm. The Brewers are a darkhorse contender who would jump at the chance to add Skubal even on a rental basis. The Braves and Phillies would both make a run.

The trade comparisons help frame what Detroit could expect to get in return. Recent rental ace trades have brought back one elite prospect and two to three secondary pieces. That is the floor. For a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber, the Tigers should be aiming higher.

The complicating factor is whether Skubal would be open to signing an extension with the team that trades for him. If a contender thinks they can lock him in through 2030, they will pay a higher price in the trade. If teams view him strictly as a 2026 rental, the price drops. Skubal has not given public hints about his willingness to extend, which is normal for a player in this situation. He is not going to give away any leverage.

The Tigers also have to consider the long view. Detroit has been rebuilding for what feels like a decade, and Skubal is one of the best things to come out of that rebuild. Trading him for prospects extends the timeline further, even if the prospect package improves the long-term outlook. There is real value in keeping a homegrown ace as the face of the franchise, even on a losing team.

The counter-argument is that the Tigers have not built a roster around Skubal good enough to win with him. The lineup has been inconsistent. The bullpen has been a problem. The rest of the rotation has been underwhelming. If you cannot win with Skubal at this point, when do you ever win with him?

The next few weeks are going to be the most important stretch of the season for the Tigers organization. They have to decide who they are. They have to be honest about whether they can compete in 2026, and they have to weigh the value of the prospect haul against the value of keeping their ace.

The smart bet is that Skubal gets moved. The trade deadline is August 3, and the Tigers have been clear that they are evaluating their options. The asking price will be enormous. The teams in the bidding will line up around the block. The eventual deal will reshape the playoff picture in the league that lands him.

Skubal has been a special pitcher in Detroit. He has accumulated a Cy Young and built a fan base that has fallen in love with him. Trading him is going to hurt. The realities of baseball economics suggest it is going to happen anyway.

The Tigers have a decision to make, and the clock is ticking on the most important call this front office has made in years.
