Tarik Skubal Is the Trade Deadline. The Tigers Have to Decide Soon.

The 2026 MLB trade deadline has a name. It is Tarik Skubal, and every contender in baseball is preparing to make a run.

The Tigers’ ace is the most coveted player on the market. He is a two-time AL Cy Young winner. He is one year away from free agency. He plays for a Detroit team that is double-digit games under .500 and going nowhere. The math is brutal for the Tigers, and they know it.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan ranked Skubal as the No. 1 trade deadline candidate this week. The list of teams that have already done preliminary homework is long. The Dodgers want him. The Yankees want him. The Brewers want him. The Braves and Phillies are doing the work too. The Red Sox would love to add him on top of a deep rotation.

The Tigers’ problem is they probably cannot get a fair return.

Skubal is a rental in the traditional sense. He will be a free agent after 2027. Acquiring teams will pay for one and a half seasons of him. That limits the return relative to a controllable star. A rental ace usually nets two top-100 prospects and maybe a third piece. Skubal is the best rental in years, so the number could push higher.

Detroit GM Scott Harris is reportedly torn. The Tigers spent years rebuilding around the AJ Hinch era. They were one of the best stories of 2024 when they made the playoffs. They are now back to losing, and Skubal is the only piece worth the headline trade.

The case for trading him is overwhelming. Detroit is not going to win in 2026. They are not extending Skubal for the kind of money it is going to take. Garrett Crochet just got nine years and $300 million from the Red Sox. Skubal will eclipse that.

The case for keeping him is also real. Skubal has been good for the Detroit community. He is a homegrown talent. Trading him sends a message to fans that the team is in another rebuild. Ownership has to weigh how that lands.

The Dodgers and Yankees are the favorites if a trade happens. Both teams have the prospect capital to make a serious bid. The Brewers are the dark horse because Milwaukee’s front office under Matt Arnold has historically been aggressive at the deadline.

Skubal’s 2026 numbers back up the hype. He is 8-2 with a 2.41 ERA. He has 124 strikeouts in 97 innings. His command has improved. His changeup is the best in baseball. He is everything a contender wants in a postseason starter.

The deadline is August 3. The Tigers have about six weeks to decide. Every game they lose between now and then makes the decision easier.

Casey Mize is also in trade talks. Reid Detmers from the Angels could be available. Sonny Gray could move from the Cardinals. The starting pitching market is going to be active. But none of those names are Tarik Skubal.

This is the year of Skubal at the deadline. Detroit knows it. The contenders know it. The decision is coming.
