The deadline blockbuster brought the reigning Cy Young winner to Los Angeles in exchange for a package of prospects. Detroit finally moved on from the pitcher they had been trying to extend for two years. The Dodgers now have arguably the most terrifying rotation in modern baseball history.
Skubal joins a group that already included Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani when he pitches. That is three Cy Young or Cy Young-caliber arms in one rotation. Playoff series get shorter when a team can trot out three aces on regular rest. October matchups get uglier for the opposition.
The impact has been mostly on paper so far. The Dodgers swept a three-game series in Atlanta this week, but Skubal has not been the finishing piece. Chris Sale threw a complete-game shutout to give the Braves the win Thursday, and Skubal has had a couple of average starts since arriving. That is normal for a pitcher adjusting to a new league.
