When the Los Angeles Dodgers traded for Tarik Skubal at the deadline, most of the baseball world assumed they were just adding a rental to a playoff rotation that already looked scary. That was underselling it. Two months later, Skubal has been the single most impactful trade acquisition of any team in 2026, and the Dodgers look like an actual dynasty.
Since the trade, Skubal has been dominant. Sub-2.00 ERA, opposing hitters at Mendoza levels against him, and command that has somehow gotten sharper in a new league. He was already the best pitcher in the American League before the trade. Now he might be the best in baseball, full stop.
The Dodgers front office deserves credit here. They gave up a real haul to Detroit, including their top pitching prospect, and they took on the risk that Skubal’s arm was going to hold up down the stretch. It has held up, and then some.
The bigger picture is what this means for October. Los Angeles now has a postseason rotation of Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani when healthy, and Tyler Glasnow. That is four legitimate top-of-rotation arms. No other team in either league can match that.
Milwaukee, Atlanta, and the Cubs are all quality teams in the National League. None of them have the pitching depth to survive a seven-game series against this Dodgers group. The gap is that wide.
The other benefit of trading for Skubal is what it does to a clubhouse. Reports out of Los Angeles have been consistent that Skubal has completely bought in, works incredibly hard between starts, and has quietly become a leader on a staff full of All-Stars. Detroit, for its part, is not thrilled but also not devastated. The prospect package the Tigers got back is elite, and the club has openly pivoted to a fully rebuild-focused approach. It was the right move for both sides.
Skubal’s contract situation is now the most interesting subplot in the sport. He is a free agent after 2027. If the Dodgers win it all this year, they are going to move heaven and earth to extend him. If they miss out, the market for a healthy Skubal in his prime will be historic.
Everyone in the sport should be paying attention. The Dodgers just went from contender to overwhelming favorite because of one trade. Baseball economics being what they are, this is what happens when the biggest market has the best pitcher too.
