Skubal is a generational left-handed starter. He throws hard, he commands the strike zone, he pitches with an edge, and he wins big games. In Detroit, he had grown into a fan favorite because of the way he attacked hitters and the way he carried himself as the leader of the pitching staff.
Trading him was a decision the Tigers front office made based on future value. They believe Hope and the two young pitchers can be foundational pieces of the next winning Detroit team. Los Angeles is heading into October as the World Series favorite in the National League. That is not a fluke. Their offense is deep. Their bullpen is functional. And now their rotation has Skubal at the top of it.
For the Tigers, this game was a homecoming and a wake-up call. Detroit is still fighting for a playoff spot in the AL Central, but the roster around Skubal has to answer whether it can win without him. The bullpen has been shaky. The rotation has holes. The offense is inconsistent.
The Tigers made the smart long-term trade. Now they have to live with the short-term consequences.
Skubal is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He is not walking through that door in Detroit for a while. Fans should enjoy the memories, appreciate the ovation, and hope the return delivers what the front office promised.
