The 2026 MLB trade deadline just got a lot thinner. Sandy Alcantara, the former Cy Young winner and the biggest arm on the market outside of Tarik Skubal, has reportedly been pulled off the trade block by the Miami Marlins.
Every contender in baseball just felt that news. The rotation help everyone was counting on is not coming. Not from Miami, at least.
Alcantara was the crown jewel of this deadline. He is 30 years old, back from Tommy John surgery this season, and pitching like the guy who won the NL Cy Young in 2022. He is under team control. He has the frame, the stuff and the track record that plays in October. The Marlins knew what they had, and apparently they decided to hold.
The deadline is August 3. That gives contenders roughly three weeks to figure out what pivot looks like without the best available starter on the board. Good luck with that.
The logic for Miami is simple. Alcantara is throwing well again. He is not going to be more valuable at this deadline than he will be next offseason or next July. The Marlins are betting on his 2027 value being higher, and if he keeps pitching like this through August and September, they are probably right.
Miami has been in rebuild mode for what feels like a decade. They finally have a true ace back at full strength. Trading him now, coming off Tommy John, sells low on the exact kind of asset the Marlins need to hold onto. This is the right baseball call for a team that is not close to contending.
For the rest of the league, this is a nightmare.
The starter market at this deadline was already thin. Skubal is the top name and there is real doubt about whether Detroit actually moves him. If Skubal stays too, contenders are going to be fighting over back-end rotation arms and reclamation projects. That is a much worse market than what we thought we had a month ago.
Think about the teams that needed pitching. The Blue Jays. The Cubs. The Astros. The Padres. All of them had Alcantara circled as the target that could actually change their October outlook. Now they are looking at second-tier arms and hoping the price does not spike into insanity.
And it will spike. When supply gets tight, everyone starts overpaying. Some team is going to give up three prospects for a rental starter with a 4.20 ERA. That is what happens when the ace of the market gets pulled.
The Skubal situation is now the whole deadline. If Detroit moves him, the market has a headliner. If they do not, this becomes one of the quietest deadlines in years for starting pitching. That is a big if. The Tigers are contending. Trading your ace when you are contending does not usually happen.
Miami playing it long is smart. Alcantara has more value to them next year than any prospect package they were going to get this month. He is a legit ace when healthy. Aces are the most valuable thing in the sport. You do not give them away because you are impatient.
The rest of the deadline is going to be about back-end starters and bullpen arms. That is not what contenders wanted. But Miami just made the call, and every general manager in baseball has to reset their board.
