The Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros got the trade season party started early. On Wednesday, the two clubs agreed to a deal that will send reliever Nate Pearson to Kansas City in exchange for High-A right-hander Max Martin.
Chandler Rome of The Athletic broke the news, and Anne Rogers of MLB.com confirmed the return. It is a small trade, but it is the first move that actually matters ahead of the August 3 deadline.
The Astros had just designated Pearson for assignment days earlier, so this is essentially Houston recouping value on a player who was about to walk out the door for nothing. Getting a real, ranked minor league arm back for a DFA’d reliever is a nice piece of business.
Pearson has one of the more interesting backstories in the game. The Blue Jays drafted him at No. 28 overall in 2017 with the idea that he would grow into a top-of-the-rotation starter. His velocity was massive. Then came injuries, mechanical issues and a slow but steady move to the bullpen.
He pitched in Toronto through 2023, moved to the Cubs in 2024, and landed with Houston earlier this year. In 16 games with the Astros, he went 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 20 innings. Nothing spectacular, but not bad for a middle relief piece.
For Kansas City, this is a low-cost depth move. The Royals are 42-60. They are not making the playoffs. Grabbing a live arm who is still under team control gives them another option to look at down the stretch and possibly into next season.
The Astros are the more interesting story here. Houston is 49-54 and is likely headed toward the sell side of the deadline for the first time in more than a decade. That is a wild sentence to type. This is a franchise that has been in five of the last seven American League Championship Series.
The bigger question in Houston is what happens with Yordan Alvarez. Reports have already surfaced that the Astros could listen on their All-Star slugger, though the return would have to be enormous. If Houston is willing to move Alvarez, this whole trade deadline gets flipped on its head.
For now, though, the Astros are just tidying up the roster. Moving Pearson gets a live arm out of the bullpen and brings back a prospect who can develop in the low minors. It is not the trade that changes their year.
Kansas City has more issues than pitching depth. The offense has been anemic. Bobby Witt Jr. is doing everything he can, but the Royals have not figured out how to build around him. Adding Pearson does not fix that.
What it does do is give general manager J.J. Picollo something to point to as the deadline approaches. The Royals are collecting arms, staying patient with the young core, and hoping the next couple of drafts fills in the holes.
This is a minor trade in the grand scheme of the deadline. But it is a signal that the market is finally moving. Bigger names are next.
