Tampa Bay opens a three-game series in Atlanta with both clubs sitting at exactly 85-58. That is not a coincidence anyone planned, and it is the best thing on the baseball schedule this week.
The Rays own the best record in the American League. The Braves lead the National League East. Two division leaders with identical records meeting in September is the kind of series that used to define pennant races before the Wild Card made everything blurry.
Tampa Bay is running away with the AL East
The Rays hold a four-game division lead over the Yankees, which is remarkable for a franchise that spends less than most teams pay their top two players. This is the fourth or fifth time Tampa Bay has done this, and the league still has not figured out how to copy it.
New York, Boston and Cleveland occupy the AL Wild Card spots behind them, with the White Sox leading the Central and the Astros holding the West. The American League bracket is close to settled.
Atlanta has more room than the record suggests
The Braves entered September with a four-game cushion over Philadelphia in the East. That is comfortable but not safe, and Philadelphia has the rotation to erase it in a week.
The broader NL picture is largely resolved. Milwaukee has the best record in baseball, and the Brewers, Dodgers, Braves and Cubs have all essentially locked up postseason spots. The Diamondbacks and Phillies fill out the field.
The league is unusually bunched
Here is the number that explains why September matters this year: 20 of the 30 teams entered Monday either in playoff position or within five games of a spot.
That is an enormous share of the league still alive with under 20 games remaining. Expanded playoffs get criticized for diluting the regular season, and there is a fair version of that complaint. There is also this, where two thirds of the sport is playing meaningful baseball in September instead of eight teams and a lot of empty stadiums.
Why this series actually matters
Seeding. Both of these teams are going to the postseason. What is on the line is home field, and in a five-game series that is worth more than any regular season stretch.
There is also the small matter of a possible World Series preview. Tampa Bay and Atlanta are two of the four or five best teams in baseball, and if the brackets hold, this is a plausible October matchup.
