Are the Red Sox and Cardinals working on a Mookie Betts trade?

St. Louis has had something of a busy week.

On Thursday, the organization agreed to a swap with the Tampa Bay Rays that would send Jose Martinez away in return for highly sought-after pitching prospect Matthew Liberatore, catching prospect Edgardo Rodriguez and a compensation pick.

According to MLB.com insider Jon Heyman, the move could be a building block to an eventual trade with Boston for Betts.

Essentially, St. Louis could simply send over everything acquired from the Rays to the Red Sox, who are trying to cut big contracts in favor of promising young talent.

The Red Sox have been hungry for pitching prospects for a while, so Liberatore could be precisely what they are looking for. And it was Boston’s Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom who originally drafted the 20-year-old to begin with.

Unlike Boston, who is fresh off a World Series victory two years ago, the Cardinals want to win and they want to win now.

They need a big name, and Betts is definitely that.

Would he be enough to put them over the top a championship? It is debatable.

Would he make them significantly better than they are now? Absolutely.
