Yankees Issue Giancarlo Stanton Injury Update

The Yankees issued a Giancarlo Stanton injury update this past week. After spending much of last year hurt, the same seems to be true in 2020.

On Wednesday, team manager Aaron Boone revealed that the 30-year-old suffered a Grade 1 right calf strain and has been ruled out indefinitely. As a result, Stanton’s status for March 26’s Opening Day is now in doubt.

Stanton reportedly hurt himself during a workout on Tuesday. Coincidentally, that also just so happened to be the day that starting pitcher Luis Severino discovered that he was out for the year as a result of Tommy John surgery.

In 2019, the designated hitter participated in only 18 outings as a result of a variety of ailments. Most notably, he found himself injured in New York’s American League Championship Series defeat to the Houston Astros. He ended up playing in just a pair of the six outings between the two teams.

Stanton’s injury is just the latest in a long line of health concerns for the Yankees last year. In addition to him and Severino, outfielder Aaron Hicks will also be out for the first half of the season.

Fortunately, this is one of the few injuries that New York has the depth to withstand. Between Aaron Judge, Mike Tauchman, Clint Frazier and Brett Gardner there are enough heavy hitters on the roster to minimize the damage of not having Stanton around.
