The New York Yankees are done pretending they are not obsessed with Mason Miller. The San Diego Padres closer is the most sought-after reliever on the market, and every report this week has the Yankees ready to bring him to the Bronx if San Diego actually makes him available.
Rival executives are “convinced” the Padres will move Miller by the August 3 deadline. San Diego is 2.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot, and Miller is by far the most valuable trade chip in their organization.
Miller has been unhittable. He is 25 for 25 in save situations. His ERA is 0.91 through 39 innings. His WHIP is 0.78. He has 72 strikeouts and has not allowed a home run. He leads every reliever in baseball with a 119 proStuff+. Nobody in the league is even in the same tier right now.
The Yankees have already sent scouts to Padres games. That is not the behavior of a team that is casually monitoring. That is a team preparing to make a real offer.
Miller himself was diplomatic when asked about the rumors during All-Star festivities. “It’s a compliment,” he said of the Yankees’ interest. “They’re a very good team, and they’re interested in good players.” He also made clear he wants to stay in San Diego.
That is what every player says. It does not mean anything.
The complicating factor is that Miller is not a rental. He is under team control through 2029. That means whoever gets him is buying multiple postseason runs, not just a two-month closer. The price is going to be enormous.
Prospect packages being tossed around include multiple top-100 names plus a young MLB piece. Any deal the Yankees put together will likely have to include Spencer Jones and one of their top pitching prospects. The Padres would probably ask for even more.
For the Yankees, the fit is obvious. The bullpen has been a mixed bag all year. The starting pitching has been solid. The offense has been streaky. Adding a lights-out closer instantly turns Aaron Boone’s late-inning management from a coin flip into a formality.
Boston is another team lurking. The Red Sox have money to spend and prospects to move, and they know they need pitching. Toronto is not going to sit out either. This is the AL East, and any real bullpen upgrade is going to have four teams calling.
The Padres are the one to watch. Do they actually pull the trigger? Owner Peter Seidler passed away in 2023 and the front office has been operating differently since. San Diego has always been a win-now organization, but the financial picture has tightened, and Miller’s extension is going to be expensive.
Moving Miller now nets an enormous package of prospects, which the Padres desperately need to restock a thin farm system. Holding him and trying to make one more run risks losing him for less in the offseason if the team stays out of contention.
The August 3 deadline is right around the corner. Every executive in baseball is watching what the Padres do with Miller. The Yankees are watching hardest. If any team is going to pay the price, it is New York.
The Bronx wants a championship. San Diego might just help them get it.
