Luis Arraez Has 90% Chance of Being Traded, Insider Reports

Luis Arraez is almost certainly getting traded.
MLBTradeRumors reports that there is a 90% chance Arraez gets moved by the August 3 deadline. The Miami Marlins are full sellers, Arraez is on an expiring contract, and contending teams are lining up for his services. The math is about as straightforward as it gets at a trade deadline.
Arraez is one of the most unique players in baseball. He is the best pure contact hitter in the league, and it is not particularly close. He has won three batting titles. His ability to put the ball in play and avoid strikeouts is essentially unmatched. There is nobody else in the modern game who does what he does at the plate.
His defense at second base has improved dramatically as well. Once viewed as a limited defender, Arraez is now considered one of the better second basemen in the league with the glove. He has worked relentlessly to add value beyond his bat, and contending teams have noticed.
The list of teams interested is long. The Yankees, Phillies, Tigers, and Brewers have all reportedly been in contact with the Marlins about Arraez. The Cardinals have also kicked tires. He fits in any contending lineup as a top-of-the-order presence who can hit anywhere from leadoff to third in the order.
What makes him such an appealing trade target is the cost. Arraez is on a one-year deal worth around $14 million. He is essentially a rental, but a high-impact one. The acquiring team only has to absorb the remaining salary for the second half. That is a manageable financial commitment even for tax-conscious organizations.
From Miami’s side, the price tag should still be real. Even for a rental, the Marlins should be able to extract a top-100 prospect plus a couple of secondary pieces. Arraez is too productive and too unique to be moved for spare parts. The Marlins front office is reportedly setting the bar high in conversations.
What complicates things is the Marlins’ broader rebuild. They have a lot of players to move. Luis Arraez, Sandy Alcantara, Jesus Luzardo, and several others are all potential trade candidates. The Marlins are not going to get full value for everyone. They have to pick their priorities.
Arraez is reportedly at the top of their priority list. The thinking is that he has the most non-pitcher trade value of anyone on the roster, and his profile attracts the broadest range of teams. Sandy Alcantara has a long-term contract that complicates trade math. Luzardo has injury concerns. Arraez is clean.
From his side, Arraez reportedly wants to go to a contender. He has spent his entire career playing for non-playoff teams. The chance to play meaningful October baseball matters to him. He would prefer a National League destination, but he is not picky.
The Yankees are the most logical fit on paper. They have a hole at second base, plenty of prospects to deal, and the urgency to win now. Arraez batting second behind Aaron Judge would be one of the best top-of-the-order combinations in baseball.
But Philadelphia, with its loaded roster and slim margin for error, is also in the conversation. The Phillies could use Arraez as the everyday third baseman or move him around the infield. He would fit beautifully in their lineup construction.
The trade deadline is August 3. Arraez almost certainly will not be wearing a Marlins uniform after that date. The only question is where he lands.
