Freddy Peralta is the biggest name on the trade market. He is also the reason the Milwaukee Brewers might blow up their entire pitching plan by August 3.
Multiple teams have called about Peralta. The Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees, Blue Jays and Phillies are all in play. Milwaukee is listening because Peralta has an $8 million team option for 2026 that becomes exercisable at the end of this season, and he is going to command $30 million per year on the open market next winter.
The Brewers have to make a decision. Pay him or move him. There is no in-between.
Why He Is Worth Everyone’s Time
Peralta has been the best pitcher on the Brewers for three years running. He is 12-4 with a 2.72 ERA this season. He has 168 strikeouts in 149 innings. He has a career FIP of 3.42.
He is 30 years old, which is not young for a starter, but he has zero injury history and his stuff has actually gotten better in the last two years. He is throwing his slider more, and it has become one of the top-10 pitches in baseball by run value.
Any team that adds him becomes a legitimate championship contender. That is why the market is what it is.
The Cubs Angle
Chicago is the most desperate team in play. They need a No. 2 starter behind Shota Imanaga. They have the prospects to make the deal happen. And they know they cannot let Milwaukee keep Peralta and lose him for a compensatory pick next spring.
The Brewers do not want to trade Peralta within the division. They also cannot let the Cubs’ package go to another team if it is the best offer.
Expect the Cubs to include either Owen Caissie or Kevin Alcantara, plus a mid-tier prospect. That should be enough.
The Dodgers Angle
Los Angeles has been in on every pitcher on the market. They have money. They have prospects. They have injuries to their rotation.
Peralta would slot into a rotation with Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow. That is a scary starting five, and the Dodgers would be the World Series favorites the moment they made the trade.
The catch is that LA is not going to include their top prospects. Andrew Friedman rarely does. That is going to be the sticking point.
The Yankees Angle
New York has been searching for another top-of-rotation arm behind Gerrit Cole. Their farm system is deep at the middle infield with George Lombard Jr. and Roderick Arias. They have the money to extend Peralta long-term.
The problem is the DH glut. The Yankees also want CJ Abrams. They cannot make two blockbuster trades at the deadline without gutting their prospect capital, and ownership is not going to allow that.
What Milwaukee Should Do
The smart play is to trade Peralta. The Brewers have Corbin Burnes’ compensatory pick to remember. They know how it feels to lose a top starter for nothing but a mid-first-round selection.
Take the two premium prospects. Reload the farm. Bet on developing the next Peralta rather than paying him $30 million per year through his mid-30s.

The Prediction
Peralta ends up with the Cubs. Chicago pays the price because they have the most desperate need and the best combination of prospects to offer. The Cubs get their No. 2 starter. The Brewers get two top-five system prospects and a lottery ticket.
Everyone in the NL Central is going to hate this trade. It probably decides the division and gives the Cubs a real chance to make a deep playoff run.
