Tarik Skubal Trade Rumors: Will the Tigers Move Their Cy Young Ace Before the Deadline?

The Detroit Tigers are 22-37 and falling out of the American League race fast. That math is starting to point toward the worst-case scenario for Tigers fans. The team may have to trade Tarik Skubal before the deadline.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal already predicted it. Skubal is going to get moved before the 2026 trade deadline. The Tigers are 11.5 games back of the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central, and Skubal is one year away from free agency. The combination of those facts almost forces Detroit’s hand.
Skubal is a two-time Cy Young winner. He is the best pitcher Detroit has had since Justin Verlander. And he might be wearing a different uniform by August 1.
Why a Trade Becomes Inevitable
If the Tigers are not going to re-sign Skubal long term, holding onto him through the deadline becomes financial malpractice. Other teams will line up to give Detroit a massive haul of prospects for a starting pitcher of his caliber. Letting him walk for a compensatory draft pick after the season would be a disaster for a rebuilding franchise.
The Tigers know this. Front office types know this. The only question is whether Skubal proves he is healthy after returning from elbow surgery to remove floating bodies. He has been on an accelerated rehab timeline, with the hope of returning by mid to late June. If he comes back and looks like himself, the trade market explodes.
Detroit’s front office has to be realistic. They are 11.5 games out. The wild card race is also slipping away. Selling assets is the right move, and Skubal is the headliner.
Where Could He Land?
The list of suitors is long and impressive. The Dodgers are mentioned most often because they are always mentioned, and they have the prospect capital to outbid anyone. The Yankees are also in the mix. The Braves and Brewers could be sleeper teams if they want to make a real run.
The Chicago Cubs might be the most interesting fit. They have been hovering in playoff contention for two years without ever taking the leap, and a top-of-the-rotation starter is exactly what they need. The Cubs have the system to make a competitive offer, and a Skubal addition would change the entire National League playoff math.
For Skubal personally, this is going to be career-defining. He is in line for a massive free agent contract this winter. A strong stretch on a contender would only push that number higher. The motivation to perform after the trade is going to be enormous.
Tigers fans should brace for it. The team that gave Skubal his shot, watched him develop into an ace, and rode him to two Cy Young wins is probably going to have to let him go for the long-term health of the franchise.
July is going to be brutal in Detroit. The deadline is going to be even worse. But the Tigers are setting up the right way for what comes next, even if it hurts.
