The Chicago Cubs are already preparing for a major offseason move. According to multiple reports, Chicago is willing to trade star outfielder Kyle Tucker this winter rather than lose him in free agency for a compensatory draft pick, and the potential return package could reshape the roster for years.
Tucker was acquired from the Houston Astros last offseason in a blockbuster deal. He has been everything the Cubs hoped for, hitting .291 with 32 home runs, 105 RBIs, and elite defense in right field. But he is a free agent this winter, and industry executives project his next contract to top $350 million over seven years.
Chicago’s front office, led by Jed Hoyer, is being realistic. The Cubs have not offered Tucker an extension close to what the open market will pay, and Tucker’s representation has made clear he plans to test free agency. Trading him this offseason is the only way to recoup real value.
The interested teams reportedly include the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, and Boston Red Sox. Each has different assets to offer, but all four are looking for an impact bat and would view Tucker as a difference-maker in October.
The Yankees fit is intriguing but complicated. New York needs a left-handed bat, and Tucker in Yankee Stadium would benefit from the short porch in right field. But the Yankees do not have the prospect capital that other suitors can offer, and Chicago will demand top-tier young talent in any deal.
The Padres are quietly the most aggressive suitor. San Diego has been rumored to be all-in on adding another star, and general manager A.J. Preller has a history of making bold moves. The Padres have prospects to move and a lineup that Tucker would fit into perfectly.
The Giants have money to spend and prospects to trade. San Francisco has emerged as a contending team under manager Bob Melvin, and the front office wants to add a legitimate middle-of-the-order presence. Tucker would be a perfect complement to Matt Chapman and Adames.
The Cubs still have to finish out the 2026 season first. Chicago is in the middle of the NL wild card race and is playing meaningful games in September. Tucker will be a huge part of any playoff push, and any trade conversations will wait until the offseason.
The bigger question is what the Cubs do with the return. If Chicago gets a package of prospects, the team is building for 2028 and beyond. If Chicago gets major league ready talent, the Cubs remain a contender for 2027 with a different look. The direction of the trade will define the direction of the franchise.
Tucker is one of the best players in baseball. He is going to get paid this winter one way or another. The Cubs just have to decide whether to be the ones writing the check.
