The Atlanta Braves are not giving up on this season, and their trade deadline shopping list just got interesting. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Braves have expressed interest in Boston Red Sox right-hander Sonny Gray as they look to add rotation depth for a playoff push.
Gray, 36, is having one of the best seasons of his career. He is 10-1 with a 2.61 ERA, and he has been the steadiest arm in a Red Sox rotation that has otherwise been unreliable. If Boston decides to sell, Gray would be one of the two or three most valuable starters on the market.
The complication is that the Red Sox have not decided if they are sellers yet. Boston enters play Thursday at 42-48, which is bad, but it is only three games out of a Wild Card spot in what has been a shockingly weak American League. That kind of gap tempts even a losing team to hold on to its veterans and try to sneak into October.
The Braves have earned the right to be aggressive. They have been decimated by injuries all year, and they are still hanging around in the NL East race. The rotation has been patched together with duct tape, and adding a legitimate top-of-the-line arm like Gray would change the math for October.
The competition is going to be brutal. Every contender wants pitching, and Gray is one of the safest bets on the market. He has been to three All-Star Games. He has been through pennant races. And he is under contract for another year, which makes him more than a rental for the team that lands him.
The elephant in the room is Tarik Skubal. The Detroit Tigers are still weighing whether to move their Cy Young winner, and if they hang on to him, Gray immediately becomes the top pitcher available. That drives his price way up. The Braves would be bidding against teams like the Yankees, Phillies, Dodgers, and possibly even the Astros.
Atlanta’s farm system is not what it was two years ago. That is going to be a problem when they try to compete in a market where prospects rule everything. But general manager Alex Anthopoulos has a track record of making creative deals, and he has always been willing to give up young talent for players who can help win right now.
From Boston’s side, the calculus is complicated. Selling Gray sends a clear message that the front office is punting on 2026, and that is a tough sell to a fan base that has already been frustrated by ownership decisions. But holding on to Gray for a Wild Card chase that might not materialize is a great way to lose the trade value entirely.
There is also the Sonny Gray factor personally. He has a family, he has been vocal about wanting to win, and he might quietly welcome a move to a contender if Boston keeps sputtering. That does not force Boston’s hand, but it changes the vibe around the situation.
The August 3 trade deadline is coming fast. If the Red Sox are still floundering in two weeks, expect the Gray sweepstakes to explode. And the Braves want to be at the front of that line.
