Aaron Judge Heads to IL With Rib Stress Fracture, Out Past Trade Deadline

The New York Yankees just lost their best player at the worst possible time. The team announced Tuesday that Aaron Judge has been diagnosed with a right rib stress fracture and is heading to the injured list. He will be shut down for four to six weeks, which puts his return well past the August 3 trade deadline.

Judge was hitting .310 with 24 home runs and a 1.018 OPS at the time of the injury, on pace for another MVP-caliber season after winning the 2025 AL MVP. He is the engine of the Yankees lineup, and removing him for a month and a half changes the math on what New York can be in 2026.

Stress fractures in ribs are tricky. They cannot be rushed. The bone simply has to heal, and any attempt to play through it risks turning a four to six week injury into a season-ending one. The Yankees medical staff is going to be deliberate, and Judge is going to follow the protocol whether he wants to or not.

The trade deadline math is now completely different for New York. The Yankees were operating as a buyer with a clear path to October. Now they have to decide whether to push their chips in for a Judge-less roster that may be playing for a Wild Card spot, or whether to pull back and reassess.

GM Brian Cashman almost certainly pushes forward. The Yankees have too much money already committed to the 2026 roster to suddenly pivot to selling, and Judge will be back for the stretch run. The question is what kind of additions make sense without your MVP cleanup hitter setting the table for them. Adding starting pitching becomes more important. Adding bullpen arms becomes critical, because the team is going to be playing more close games.

Byron Buxton of the Twins has already been mentioned as a potential outfield target who could fill some of the production void in the short term. The Twins have been struggling, and Buxton with 18 home runs and an .871 OPS is exactly the kind of bat the Yankees suddenly need.

Either way, the AL East just got more interesting. The Blue Jays and Red Sox were already chasing New York. Now they have a six-week window to catch up before Judge gets back and reminds everyone why the Yankees were the favorites in the first place.
