More than a decade ago McKayla Maroney used the 2012 Olympics as a launchpad for a very successful career.
As an integral member of the “Fierce Five” at the London Games, Maroney accomplished two separate but equally impressive feats.
First and foremost, she represented well for Team USA and took home gold in the team event and silver in the vault – no small feat. Secondly, she established herself as a viral superstar who continues to have a massive following to this day.
That latter achievement is why Maroney set the internet ablaze this past week. In a series of racy photos, the gymnastics legend showed off a variety of provocative wardrobe choices that garnered quite the reaction from fans and casual admirers alike.

With more than 1.4 million followers on Instagram alone, anything Maroney puts out there immediately goes viral. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a racy poolside video, provocative Valentine’s day offering or something else entirely. Fans love it all.

A lot of people think it’s easy to become an influencer on the scale that Maroney is, but they are mistaken. Demonstrably so.
When Maroney’s former Team USA teammate Aly Raisman tried to publish significantly more provocative photos in similar fashion, she could not replicate the success. When it came from her, the offerings just didn’t hit the same way
