Aly Raisman Provocative Sports Illustrated Photos Go Viral

Aly Raisman rose to international prominence 10 years ago as the leader of a U.S. Gymnastics unit that would captured America’s heart for two consecutive Olympic runs.

In 2012 Raisman captained the infamous “Fierce Five” group. Four years later, she led the “Final Five.” On both occasions, the squads won their respective team competitions.

In the years since, Raisman achieved a certain level of celebrity generally reserved for people who reach the top of their sports.

All of that culminated in an appearance for Sports Illustrated. Recently, the images from that shoot went viral again on social media.

“I’m an athlete,” she said at the time. “I’m a gymnast. So, I’m used to being in the gym all the time but then being able to shoot in a swimsuit and being sexy…I’ve never done anything like it before.”

The whole point of the shoot, as far as Raisman was concerned, was to empower women.

“Now, especially, is such an important time for women,” she said.

“For people to understand that you can wear whatever you want and you still should be respected by everyone. And hopefully, we can get to a point where everyone is supportive of everyone’s body type, no matter how they look.”

Raisman boasts more than 2 million followers on Instagram. Some of her most popular posts as of late featured her and her former teammate, McKayla Maroney.

Maroney, much like Raisman, is also a massive presence on social media. Whether she is posing for provocative photos or publishing racy videos – she’s always going viral for one reason or another.

Both Raisman and Maroney helped the U.S. reach new heights in gymnastics, so it’s great that they are still such mainstays in the general cultural zeitgeist.

What will this pair ultimately achieve next?

Time will tell.
