Lil Wayne’s Take On Grizzlies Star Ja Morant Goes Viral (Video)

Lil Wayne’s Take On Grizzlies Star Ja Morant Goes Viral (Video)

Lil Wayne sat down this week to discuss one of the biggest stories in the NBA right now: Ja Morant’s ongoing off-the-court issues.

As things presently stand, the Memphis Grizzlies star is facing a potentially lengthy suspension after an unfortunate video of him seemingly brandishing a gun, again, went viral.

This week, in a conversation with Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes on the ‘All The Smoke’ podcast, Lil Wayne offered his take on the situation.

It caught some folks off guard.

“Do y’all know that boy?” Lil Wayne asked.

“Because I don’t. I know him from dunking and jumping. I only started knowing him when I started paying attention to him in his last year of college. He come from like a town with three thousand people. …  What y’all expect? Y’all gave him $200 million.

“I just said, a town with three thousand people. You expect him to be responsible? Now we tripping. That’s magic. Because I could tell you now, I come from a real well-raised, beautiful mother, nice, you know what I mean? My mama would bust her a** to make sure everything around me was nice. I still was a knucklehead. I shot myself.”

NBA fans seemed to really appreciate this sober take on the situation.

Lil Wayne then went on to suggest that people stop rushing to judge Morant, and instead try to put themselves in his shoes.

“The best I could do is remember when I was younger and my homies, my squad, my n****s around me, [were] at the age where they don’t have money,” he continued.

“I’m the one with the money and I don’t even know how much money I’ll end up with, but I’m the one with some money in my pocket. I know I got a bright future.

“My homies, they ain’t on a payroll. They my homies, they live good when they with me. When I gotta go to work and all that, they gotta go back to being who they gotta be. So what I’m saying that to say, they in them streets and I was aware of that.”

“So if I was going through something at that point in time, something public what slime going through, I could imagine the rebellious attitude I would have if my homies was egging that attitude on.”

Part of the problem for Morant, obviously, is that this is a recurring situation.

If he had only gotten in trouble once, nobody would say anything. But this is a guy who had dancers complaining about his behavior. Who after getting off with a slap on the wrist for his past transgressions followed it up by going completely wild as soon as the Grizzlies got bounced from the playoffs.

That is the biggest issue facing Morant right now.

Despite everything, though – the public is very polarized on how this situation should be handled.

Will Lil Wayne’s wise words ultimately influence how the NBA opts to punish Morant? Time will tell.
