USC Makes Surprising Final Decision On Clay Helton
USC made a surprising final decision on Clay Helton.
Helton, the much-maligned head coach of the Trojans, looked to be on the outs multiple times this year as his team struggled.
Urban Meyer was frequently mentioned as Helton’s inevitable successor come season’s end, and it seemed like a foregone conclusion that USC would part ways with him sooner rather than later.
That all changed with the hiring of new athletic director Mike Bohn.
Bohn having zero ties to Meyer suggested that the Trojans would not pursue the former Ohio State coach after all, and that cleared the way for a Helton return.
Helping his case was the fact that, after a 3-3 start to the season, Helton rallied the team to an 8-4 finish that saw the Trojans win five of their last six games.
According to both Joel Klatt and Bruce Feldman, USC has decided to keep Helton around for one more year.

There already multiple reports of fan unrest as a result of this decision, but it looks like they will have to find a way to deal with it.
