Tulane Mardi Gras Uniforms Break the Internet: Fans Call It ‘Uniform of the Year’

Tulane just dropped a uniform. And college football Twitter has already declared it the winner of the year, even though the season hasn’t started yet.
The Green Wave revealed their new Mardi Gras themed “City Edition” uniforms on Wednesday, and the reaction was immediate. Fans loved them. Analysts loved them. Even competing college football accounts had to admit that these things are legitimately great.
The details are what make them work. The word “UPTOWN” runs across the helmet as a tribute to the traditional Mardi Gras parade route through New Orleans. There are beads hanging from the first and last letters of each player’s name across the back of the jersey. Purple, green, and gold color scheme, of course. The whole thing captures the spirit of Mardi Gras without feeling like a costume.
“Tulane’s new Mardi Gras uniforms are simply incredible,” posted College Football Zone. Chris Vannini called them “terrific.” Cam Mellor said he doesn’t think he’s ever liked a uniform more.
Hunter Shelton might have said it best: “Uniform of the year award already wrapped up and it’s August 12th. Bravo, Tulane.”
That’s the kind of universal approval that almost never happens with college football alternate uniforms. Usually there’s a split reaction, with half the fanbase loving something and the other half calling it hideous. Not this time. The Mardi Gras look landed with everyone.
The extra layer of fun here is when Tulane is planning to wear them. The Green Wave will debut the Mardi Gras jerseys in Week 2 against South Alabama on September 12 at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans. And that matchup adds some serious pettiness to the story.
Back in 2023, when South Alabama traveled to New Orleans, the Jaguars teased a “Home of Mardi Gras” back bumper and helmet decal, playing on a long-running argument between New Orleans and Mobile about which city is the true birthplace of Mardi Gras in America. Locals in New Orleans were not thrilled. South Alabama ended up scrapping the back bumper after taking heat online.
Now Tulane, three years later, gets to wear “King of Mardi Gras” themed uniforms in a home game against those same South Alabama Jaguars. That’s a coordinated troll. Perfectly petty. Absolutely worth the wait.
Tulane has actually been on a serious run of good alternate uniform designs over the last few seasons. They’ve leaned into the New Orleans identity in ways that feel authentic rather than corporate. It has become part of the program’s brand.
The football program has been solid on the field too. Under Jon Sumrall, the Green Wave has stayed competitive in the American Athletic Conference and produced NFL talent. This isn’t just a uniform gimmick, this is a real football program with a growing national profile.
But let’s be real. On September 12, the uniforms will be the story. The football will be the secondary talking point. And when Tulane walks out at Yulman Stadium in those purple, green, and gold Mardi Gras jerseys against South Alabama, the college football world is going to be watching.
Mission accomplished, Tulane. Uniform of the year, no contest.
