Surprising Twist In Alabama Quarterback Competition
A surprising twist in Alabama’s quarterback competition has developed.
This season, the Crimson Tide officially have to move on from Tua Tagovailoa.
Seeing as Tagovailoa was arguably the greatest quarterback in program history, he leaves behind some pretty big shoes to fill.
The obvious heir apparent would seem to be Mac Jones, who took over for Tagovailoa last season following his season-ending hip injury.
Following Tagovailoa’s injury, Jones recorded 1,503 yards and 14 scores along with three picks.
Beyond Jones, Alabama also has five-star recruit Bryce Young, as well as four star recruits Paul Tyson and Taulia Tagovailoa.
Given the relative lack of experience among the other candidates for the starting spot, it is a bit shocking that Jones is not simply a lock for the gig.
“Competition is always good,” Jones said recently.
“Obviously, we have a great quarterback room and we are going to miss Tua but he’s taught us a lot and I’m looking forward to leading the guys out there and just becoming as best as we can as a unit.”
The biggest competitor with a claim to Jones’ starting spot appears to be Young.
As a five-star recruit, he brings a skill set to the table that few can rival.
That said, it is hard to envision a scenario where anyone but Jones ends up winning the starting spot.
A final decision on who the 2020-21 starter will be should be made at some point in the next couple of months.
