Head coach Bill Belichick announced Thursday that his son Steve, the Tar Heels’ defensive coordinator, has been placed on indefinite medical leave. When Brian Murphy asked if Steve would be back for the season opener, Bill offered only that his son would return “as soon as possible.”
That is a Bill Belichick answer if there ever was one. Vague, controlled, and telling you everything and nothing at the same time. But it also confirms the seriousness. If this were a short-term matter, we would have heard a timeline.
Who Steve Belichick Is to This Program
Steve Belichick is not just a coordinator with a famous last name. He is a career football coach who spent nearly two decades on his father’s New England Patriots staff, working his way up from coaching assistant to safeties coach to outside linebackers coach. He was part of three Super Bowl-winning defenses.
He left New England after the 2023 season to run the defense at the University of Washington. When Bill accepted the North Carolina job, Steve followed and took the same role in Chapel Hill. There have been credible reports that Steve is being groomed as his father’s long-term successor at UNC.
Bad Timing for a Program That Needs Momentum
The Tar Heels are coming off an underwhelming first year under Bill Belichick. The season did not deliver the immediate turnaround some fans expected, and the defense specifically had growing pains as it adjusted to Steve’s system. Now, with fall camp underway and the opener approaching, UNC has to figure out how to run its defense without the guy who designed it.
