Is Robert Saleh leaving the 49ers for Michigan State?
This week, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio abruptly retired.
The longtime Spartans head coach leaves behind a big vacancy that will need to be filled by an equally big name.
In the immediate aftermath of Dantonio’s departure, multiple potential candidates emerged to fill the void.
Thus far, Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell and Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi are the two names most frequently mentioned for the position.
Late Tuesday, a new potential suitor emerged: Salah.
Long recognized as one of the NFL’s most respected names, Salah is a defensive genius that could make an immediate impact on the Spartans.
It would also likely help Salah secure a pro head coaching job down the road if he can do something special following Dantonio’s departure.
There are a few obvious names — Fickell, Narduzzi — for the now open Michigan State job. But I wouldn’t discount 49ers DC Robert Saleh as a candidate for the job.
He coached there for 2 years, got a master’s degree from there, has an uncle who played there. It’s home for him.

Saleh was reportedly a finalist for the Cleveland Browns head coaching job that ultimately ended up going to Kevin Stefanski.
Previously, Saleh served as an assistant coach for Michigan State from 2002 to 2003.
Will Saleh ultimately land the Spartans gig? We’ll find out once and for all in the coming weeks.
