Houston is ranked No. 23 to open Week 2 after a Week 1 upset of Rice put the Cougars in the AP Top 25 for the first time in over two years. Oregon State comes to TDECU Stadium at noon Eastern on ESPN, and both programs enter the game with legitimate reasons to be optimistic.
Houston is in year three of the Willie Fritz era. Fritz took over a program that was struggling to adjust to the Big 12, and the Cougars finished 4-8 in 2024 before improving to 8-5 in 2025 with a bowl win. The buzz around the program has slowly grown, and Week 1 validated a lot of the offseason optimism.
Quarterback Conner Weigman transferred to Houston from Texas A&M in December, and the fit has been immediate. Weigman threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the opener. His mobility gives Fritz’s option-heavy offense a dimension it lacked, and his arm has been sharper than anyone expected.
Oregon State is rebuilding under second-year head coach Trent Bray. The Beavers were decimated by the Pac-12 collapse and had to reload with transfers across the roster. They opened the year with a comfortable win over Idaho State, but this is their first real test.
The Beavers’ quarterback situation is a story of its own. Maalik Murphy transferred in from Duke and beat out Ben Gulbranson in fall camp. Murphy has a huge arm and has struggled with decision-making at previous stops, and Houston’s aggressive defensive scheme should challenge him early.
The Cougars’ defense returns most of last year’s starters. Linebacker Jamal Morris is a legitimate All-Big 12 candidate. Cornerback Latrell Neville has NFL scouts watching every snap. The pass rush has been improved by Miami transfer Rueben Bain Jr., who has been dominant in fall camp.
The betting line is Houston minus 6.5 with a total of 51.5. The line has moved a full point toward Houston since it opened, and sharp bettors have been on the Cougars all week. The public has split, largely because Oregon State’s name recognition still carries weight.
Oregon State’s motivation is respect. The Beavers were left for dead when the Pac-12 dissolved, and every win against a Power Four program builds the case that Corvallis still deserves to be treated seriously. A win over a ranked Houston team on the road would be a massive boost.
Kickoff is at noon Eastern on ESPN. The winner of this game likely rises into the top 20, and the loser has to regroup fast because both teams have brutal conference schedules waiting.
