Ohio State Lands Top 2028 QB Chris Vargas: Buckeyes Now Own the Nation’s No. 1 Class
Ohio State just closed the door on the biggest quarterback recruitment in the 2028 class. Chris Vargas, the top-ranked signal-caller in that cycle, committed to the Buckeyes on Saturday, picking Ryan Day’s program over Florida, Michigan, and Oregon.
“Just the coaching staff and the place they’re at, the culture, they have everything that is great for me and the right fit for me,” Vargas told Steve Wiltfong of On3. “I think Ohio State is the place that can develop me the best.”
This is a full-blown recruiting statement from the Buckeyes. Ohio State already had the No. 1 class in the country for 2028 before Vargas made his choice. Now they have added a five-star quarterback to a class that also includes two other five-stars and a stack of blue-chip talent up and down the depth chart.
Vargas is not a mobile quarterback in the mold of Michigan’s recent recruits. He is a pocket passer with what evaluators call potentially elite arm talent. Think Justin Herbert build with a college-ready release. He has been dominant at Lawrence’s St. John’s Preparatory School in Massachusetts, where he already won a state title last season. He is heading into his junior year.
The commitment closes a recruiting battle that had been building for over a year. Florida made a hard run at him behind Billy Napier’s staff, hoping to sell him on immediate playing time. Michigan pitched itself as the offensive-line factory that could keep him upright. Oregon leaned on Dan Lanning’s track record with quarterbacks and Nike money. None of it was enough.
What Ryan Day sold Vargas on was development, an NFL-style scheme, and a track record. Ohio State has produced C.J. Stroud, Justin Fields, and Dwayne Haskins in recent years. Every one of them heard their name called in the first round of the NFL Draft. That pipeline is now stocked with even more talent for 2028 and beyond.
Chip Kelly runs the Ohio State offense, which added another wrinkle to the recruitment. Kelly’s system emphasizes tempo and multiple looks, and his willingness to adjust to a quarterback’s strengths was reportedly a big selling point. Vargas will get to develop under one of the most experienced play-callers in football.
The 2028 class is now stacked in Columbus. Vargas is the third five-star recruit to pledge, joining a group of skill-position players and defensive standouts who could form the core of an Ohio State roster for years. The Buckeyes will lose plenty of talent in the next couple cycles, including Jeremiah Smith at some point, but Day has built a machine that just keeps restocking.
The Big Ten got its top-two preseason ranking this year with Ohio State No. 1 and Oregon No. 2 in the coaches’ poll. That gap could grow if Vargas develops the way scouts expect. By the time he starts a game in Columbus, the Buckeyes could be running the country.
