Nico Iamaleava Needs Knee Surgery and Is Out for the Season: What It Means for 6-0 UCLA

UCLA confirmed on Monday that quarterback Nico Iamaleava needs surgery on his knee and will miss the rest of the 2026 season. The Bruins are 6-0, ranked ninth in the AP poll, and they have already won two games without him.

That last part is the strange heart of this story. Losing a starting quarterback in October usually ends a season. UCLA keeps climbing.

The injury was worse than it looked

Iamaleava went down late in the second quarter at Oregon on Oct. 10. He scrambled, took a hit from Bear Alexander and Jerry Mixon, and his left leg twisted underneath him. At the time it looked minor enough that he missed a single play, came back, and threw an interception before halftime.

The initial belief was a quad injury. Head coach Bob Chesney said on Oct. 13 there was serious concern Iamaleava could miss the year, and has since described the injury as severe. By Monday it was surgery and a season.

UCLA won that Oregon game 17-15 to go 5-0, then beat Wisconsin 17-7 on Oct. 17 with a backup making his first career start.

Ty Dieffenbach was third on the depth chart

The quarterback who has taken over is a Cal Poly transfer who spent most of the season behind Iamaleava’s younger brother, Madden. Dieffenbach came in cold at Oregon and went 3-of-6 for 43 yards with a touchdown. Then he started against Wisconsin and completed 22 of 33 for 264 yards.

“I just thought he came through in the clutch,” Chesney said afterward. “His confidence never wavered. Our confidence in him never wavered, and he delivered.”

Coaches say that about backups all the time. The difference here is that the Bruins scored 17 points, won by 10, and moved up in the poll.

About Iamaleava’s actual season

Here is the uncomfortable number. In six games, Iamaleava threw for 982 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions, adding 144 rushing yards and a score. For the most scrutinized transfer quarterback in the country on an undefeated top-10 team, that is a pedestrian stat line.

UCLA is 6-0 because of a defense that has allowed 15 points to Oregon and seven to Wisconsin, and because Chesney’s team wins the kind of games that used to get away from this program. The Bruins beat Maryland 54-3 and Purdue 52-38 earlier, so the offense can move. It just has not needed Iamaleava to carry it.

None of which makes this a good break. Iamaleava was the insurance policy for a game UCLA could not win on defense alone, and that game is probably coming. They are 4-0 in the Big Ten, third among conference teams behind No. 3 Ohio State and No. 6 Indiana, with a real College Football Playoff path in front of them.

What is next

UCLA hosts Michigan State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific. Dieffenbach gets his second career start, and the schedule from here decides whether an undefeated season survives the loss of its most famous player.

No date for Iamaleava’s surgery has been announced, no recovery timetable has been released, and UCLA has not said anything about his status beyond this year. Those are all questions for December.

For now the Bruins are undefeated, ranked ninth, and quarterbacked by a man almost nobody had heard of two weeks ago. That is the season they have, and it is going better than the one they planned.
