Miami Quarterback Tate Martell Is Already Suspended
Miami quarterback Tate Martell is somehow already suspended.
Martell was scratched from the Hurricanes’ lineup on Thursday night prior to their Week 1 game against UAB.
Former Houston star D’Eriq King got the majority of the reps at quarterback in the 31-14 victory, ultimately going 15 of 23 for 141 yards and a touchdown through the air and 83 yards and a score on the ground.
Needless to say, Martell’s absence was not missed because he has yet to make any sort of impact on Miami’s football program beyond generating headlines.
After the game, head football coach Manny Diaz revealed that Martell was suspended for an unspecified reason.
And thus continues the strange tale of Tate Martell, a one-time predicted college football star whose relevance now is simply the byproduct of how weird his story has become.
Martell opted to leave Ohio State back in 2019 after Justin Fields came in from Georgia. Anticipating he wouldn’t get any playing time with the Buckeyes, the youngster sought out a locale that would remedy that.

Ultimately, he settled on Miami.
Unfortunately, shortly after his arrival, Martell proved incapable of actually differentiating himself on the football field from a group of largely unremarkable quarterbacks. He eventually found himself behind N’Kosi Perry and Jarren Williams on the depth chart.
When King announced he was transferring to Miami, it became clear that there was no way Martell would crack the rotation. Nevertheless, him being suspended is still a bit of a surprise.
Additional details on what precisely led to Martell’s absence on Thursday night should come out in the coming days and weeks.
Miami’s next game will come against Louisville on September 19.
