Lane Kiffin was hired at LSU for a lot of reasons. Winning football games was the main one. Making Saturdays entertaining as hell was a close second.
Kiffin delivered on both fronts in his debut. LSU blew out Clemson in Death Valley, and then Kiffin walked to the postgame podium and delivered a line about the Clemson offense that had SEC Twitter howling within seconds.
He did not name Dabo Swinney directly. He did not need to. Kiffin has been doing this for two decades, going back to his USC and Tennessee days, and he knows exactly how to phrase a shot so it lands without giving the opposing coach a clean quote to fire back with.
The gist of his comment was that Clemson’s offense looked stuck in 2015, and that his defense had no problem taking away what they were trying to do because they knew exactly what was coming. Ouch.
Kiffin has always been the villain in college football, the coach other fan bases love to hate. LSU fans, at least for now, are absolutely eating it up. If he keeps beating name programs like this, they will forgive a lot of the sideshow.
The LSU defense was the story of the night. New defensive coordinator Blake Baker had his group flying around, and Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik never looked comfortable. The Tigers got pressure on almost every dropback, and the secondary made Klubnik hold the ball too long.
Offensively, Kiffin’s system is going to take a couple weeks to fully click, but there were enough big plays to feel good about where this is going. The quarterback situation looked stable, the tight ends were used well, and the tempo forced Clemson into substitution issues all night.
What matters more than any of that is the tone Kiffin just set. LSU under Brian Kelly felt buttoned up and corporate. LSU under Kiffin is going to feel loud, chaotic, and a little bit dangerous. That is what LSU football is supposed to feel like.
Alabama is on the schedule in early November. That is when the real test comes. If Kiffin is still trolling and still winning by that point, he will not just be the SEC coach of the year candidate. He will be a legitimate national coach of the year contender in his first season back at the top of the sport.
The 2026 season is one week old. Lane Kiffin is already making it his.
